What it is
Pure vitamin C, L-ascorbic acid, is famously effective and famously fragile: it oxidises quickly, needs a low pH that can sting, and browns in the bottle. 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is a stabilised derivative that carries an ethyl group to protect the molecule, then converts to active vitamin C in the skin. You keep the chemistry and lose the instability.
How it works
Antioxidant defence
It neutralises the free radicals generated by UV and pollution, the oxidative stress that ages skin and triggers pigment. This is vitamin C's foundational role and the reason it belongs in a morning routine under SPF.
Brightens on two fronts
It interrupts the pigment pathway mid-reaction and helps chelate the copper that tyrosinase needs to function, so it works on both existing dullness and new pigment formation.
The vitamin C landscape: forms and trade-offs
'Vitamin C' on a label can mean very different molecules with very different behaviour. Understanding the main forms explains why formulas choose as they do.
- L-Ascorbic Acid (LAA): pure vitamin C. The most potent and most researched, but also the most unstable: it needs a low, potentially irritating pH, oxidises quickly, and browns once opened.
- 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid: a stabilised derivative that attaches an ethyl group to protect the molecule, then converts to active vitamin C in the skin. It is far more stable, gentler, and works near skin-friendly pH, which is why SENSCERA uses it.
- Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP) and Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP): gentle, water-soluble, very stable derivatives, well suited to sensitive or blemish-prone skin, though generally milder than LAA or ethyl ascorbic acid.
- Ascorbyl Glucoside and Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate: other stabilised forms, the latter oil-soluble for richer textures.
The honest trade-off is potency versus stability and tolerability. A stabilised derivative that stays active in the bottle and on the skin can outperform a pure form that has already oxidised, and it does so without the sting.
Why vitamin C, E and ferulic acid are formulated together
Vitamin C's antioxidant power is amplified when it is paired with vitamin E and ferulic acid. Vitamin E protects the skin's lipids and is regenerated by vitamin C, while ferulic acid stabilises both and boosts the whole system. This trio is one of the most established antioxidant combinations in skincare, defending across both the water and oil phases of skin at once.
The evidence
Stabilised ascorbic acid derivatives have solid support for antioxidant protection and for improving the look of radiance and even tone, with far better stability and tolerability than raw L-ascorbic acid.
Antioxidants extend, not replace, sun protection. Vitamin C under SPF is the point, neither does the other's job.
