Works with balancing actives (Zinc PCA) and soothing extracts to keep the scalp clear without over-drying.
Salicylic Acid
A beta-hydroxy acid that gently clears build-up and flakes from the scalp, oil-soluble, so it works where the scalp needs it.
What it is
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA). Its defining feature is that it is oil-soluble, so it can work within the oily environment of the scalp and follicle, gently loosening build-up, excess oil and flakes. In haircare its role is a clear, balanced, comfortable scalp.
How it works
Clears build-up and flakes
It gently dissolves the bonds holding dead surface cells and build-up, helping clear flaking and residue for a cleaner, more comfortable scalp.
Works in oil
Being oil-soluble, it penetrates sebum to act where scalp congestion actually forms, something water-soluble acids can't do as well.
Why an oil-soluble acid is different
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid, and its defining trait is that it is oil-soluble. That lets it pass through skin's surface oils and into the lining of the pore, where water-soluble AHAs cannot reach. Inside the pore it loosens the mix of dead cells and sebum that causes congestion and blackheads, which is why it is the acid of choice for oily, blemish-prone skin and clogged pores. It is also naturally soothing, a relative of aspirin, giving it a calming quality alongside its clearing action. On the scalp, that same oil-cutting, comforting profile makes it a gentle clarifier.
The evidence
Salicylic acid is a well-established, thoroughly studied exfoliant, widely used for scalp clarity, flaking and congestion at cosmetic strengths.
Used at gentle cosmetic levels for scalp comfort, clarifying and balancing rather than stripping.
