A stable, gentle tyrosinase inhibitor that reduces new pigment at the source, a modern successor to harsher lightening agents.

What it is

Alpha Arbutin is a glycoside: an active molecule bonded to a sugar, which releases slowly on the skin rather than all at once. That slow release is central to its tolerability. The alpha form is more stable and better studied than the beta form found in some plant extracts.

How it works

Inhibits tyrosinase

Melanin production has a rate-limiting step, the enzyme tyrosinase, which converts the amino acid tyrosine down the chain toward pigment. Alpha Arbutin competitively inhibits tyrosinase, so less new pigment is produced in the first place.

Works at the source, not the surface

Because it acts on synthesis, it addresses pigment before it forms and travels upward, which is why it is a prevention-and-fade active, used consistently over weeks, rather than an instant one.

The evidence

Alpha Arbutin has good published support for reducing the appearance of dark spots and uneven tone, with markedly better stability and tolerability than crude hydroquinone. It suits daily, long-term cosmetic use.

Works well with
