Polyglutamic Acid
A large peptide-based humectant that forms a water-holding film on the skin, often described as holding more water than hyaluronic acid.
What it is
Polyglutamic acid is a humectant made of chains of glutamic acid (an amino acid), produced by fermentation. It is a large molecule that stays at the surface, where it forms a light, moisture-locking film and is often cited for its very high water-holding capacity.
How it works
Forms a moisture film
It sits on the surface and holds a reservoir of water against the skin, smoothing texture and giving an immediate plumped, hydrated look.
Reduces water loss
By filming over the surface it also slows evaporation, complementing humectants that work deeper down.
The evidence
Polyglutamic acid has good support as a high-capacity surface humectant, frequently paired with hyaluronic acid to hydrate at two different depths.
Works best layered under an emollient that seals the water it holds, a humectant film still needs sealing.
