Matrixyl

INCI: Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 · Matrixyl, Pal-KTTKS
Supports firmnessSmooths fine lines

A messenger peptide that signals the skin to rebuild its support matrix, the most recognised name in cosmetic peptides.

What it is

Matrixyl is a pentapeptide (five amino acids) attached to a palmitic-acid tail that helps it penetrate. The peptide fragment mimics a piece of collagen; when the skin detects that fragment, it responds as though repairing collagen, effectively a signal to rebuild.

How it works

Signals matrix synthesis

By mimicking a collagen breakdown fragment, it prompts the skin to increase production of collagen and other extracellular-matrix components, supporting firmness and the look of fewer fine lines.

Penetrates via its lipid tail

The palmitoyl tail lets a water-soluble peptide cross the lipid barrier, a small but essential piece of delivery engineering.

A messenger, not a filler

Matrixyl (palmitoyl peptides) works by signalling. The peptide mimics a fragment that appears when skin's support structures break down, and its presence effectively tells skin to carry out its normal repair and rebuilding activity, supporting the look of firmness and smoothness over time. The palmitoyl (fatty) portion helps the peptide penetrate. As with all peptides, expectations should be realistic and the timeline measured in months of consistent use, not days. Its strength is being gentle and well tolerated while contributing to a firmer-looking complexion.

The evidence

Matrixyl peptides have good published support for improving the appearance of fine lines and skin firmness, and are among the best-known cosmetic anti-ageing actives with a gentle tolerability profile.

Works well with

Layers well with hydrators, niacinamide and other peptides; a natural stack-mate for GHK-Cu.

Who it's for

Anyone addressing early fine lines, loss of firmness, or overall skin quality, and a gentle entry into anti-ageing.

Worth knowing

Peptides are cumulative and gentle, the trade-off for that gentleness is patience over roughly 8–12 weeks.
