Lactic Acid

INCI: Lactic Acid · AHA
ExfoliatesHydratesSmooths

An AHA that exfoliates while it hydrates, one of the few acids that also moisturises as it renews.

What it is

Lactic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid, originally from milk and now typically produced by fermentation. It occupies a middle ground in strength, and is unusual among acids for being hydrating as well as exfoliating. It is related to the skin's own moisturising factors, so it renews without leaving skin as dry as some acids do.

How it works

Exfoliates the surface

It loosens dead surface cells to reveal smoother, brighter skin and refine texture.

Hydrates as it works

Unlike harsher acids, it supports the skin's moisture, making it a gentler route to renewal.

The AHA that also hydrates

Lactic acid sits in the middle of the AHA range for size and strength, but it is unusual in one respect: it is part of skin's own natural moisturising factors, so it hydrates as it exfoliates. Where other acids can leave skin tight and dry, lactic renews while supporting moisture, making it a gentler route to smoother, brighter skin and a good choice for drier or slightly sensitive complexions. Gentler than glycolic, more hydrating than most, it is a versatile all-rounder.

The evidence

Lactic acid is a well-established, thoroughly studied AHA valued for smoothing, brightening and its comparatively hydrating, gentle profile.

Works well with

Blends with other AHAs and PHAs for balanced resurfacing; follows well with hydrators.

Who it's for

Most skin types wanting smoother, brighter skin, including drier skin that finds other acids harsh.

Worth knowing

A balanced, hydrating exfoliant, resurfacing that respects the barrier. Always pair acid routines with SPF.
