The details that decide how an acid behaves
Two things govern any exfoliating acid: molecule size and pH. Glycolic acid is the smallest AHA, so it penetrates fastest and acts most strongly, which is both its power and the reason it needs to be well formulated. Free-acid concentration and pH matter as much as the headline percentage: an acid only exfoliates efficiently within a certain low-pH range, so a well-buffered formula at a sensible pH is safer and more comfortable than a high number alone.
