Glycolic Acid

INCI: Glycolic Acid · AHA
ExfoliatesEvens toneBoosts radiance

The most-studied AHA and the smallest. It penetrates efficiently for powerful smoothing and radiance.

What it is

Glycolic acid is the smallest alpha-hydroxy acid (from sugar cane), which lets it penetrate quickly and act efficiently. It is the most-researched AHA and the benchmark for resurfacing, powerful on texture, tone and radiance. Its potency is why it belongs in a carefully-balanced, wash-off format for at-home use.

How it works

Efficient exfoliation

Its small size means it penetrates readily to loosen dead cells, delivering strong smoothing and radiance benefits.

Evens and brightens

With consistent use it improves the look of tone, fine lines and dullness.

The details that decide how an acid behaves

Two things govern any exfoliating acid: molecule size and pH. Glycolic acid is the smallest AHA, so it penetrates fastest and acts most strongly, which is both its power and the reason it needs to be well formulated. Free-acid concentration and pH matter as much as the headline percentage: an acid only exfoliates efficiently within a certain low-pH range, so a well-buffered formula at a sensible pH is safer and more comfortable than a high number alone. This is exactly why SENSCERA uses glycolic within a balanced, buffered, wash-off blend rather than at an aggressive standalone strength. Always follow acid use with daily SPF, since fresh skin is more sun-sensitive.

The evidence

Glycolic acid is the most extensively studied AHA, with strong support for texture, radiance and tone, the classic resurfacing acid.

Works well with

Balanced with gentler acids (mandelic, lactic) and PHAs, and buffered by soothing actives.

Who it's for

Those wanting visible smoothing and radiance; introduce gradually if new to acids.

Worth knowing

Powerful, used here in a controlled wash-off blend, and always followed by daily SPF.
