What it is
Ectoin is an extremolyte: a molecule that certain microbes produce to survive brutal environments, extreme salt, heat and dryness. It works not by adding water loosely but by organising water molecules into a protective shell around proteins and cell membranes, physically stabilising them against stress.

Ectoin is an 'extremolyte', a molecule that certain microbes produce to survive extreme heat, dryness and salinity. It works by a mechanism distinct from ordinary humectants: it forms an organised shell of water molecules around itself, and around the proteins and membranes of skin cells. This 'ectoin hydration complex' physically stabilises cell structures and helps them resist stress from UV, heat, pollution and dehydration. So beyond hydrating, it protects, which is why it appears in both SENSCERA's hydration and sun-defence systems, and why it suits reactive, stressed and sensitive skin.
