Carnosine

INCI: Carnosine · L-Carnosine
AntioxidantProtects proteinsSupports firmness

A dipeptide antioxidant that protects skin proteins from a specific ageing process called glycation, 'sugar-sag'.

What it is

Carnosine is a dipeptide (two amino acids) with an unusual anti-ageing angle: it helps defend against glycation, the process where sugar molecules bind to and stiffen skin proteins like collagen. Glycation is associated with loss of elasticity and a dull, sallow look, so anti-glycation is an increasingly recognised part of skin longevity.

How it works

Fights glycation

It helps protect collagen and other proteins from sugar-induced cross-linking (glycation), which is associated with stiffness, dullness and loss of bounce.

Antioxidant support

It also contributes general antioxidant defence, adding to the skin's resilience against stress.

The evidence

Carnosine has emerging evidence for anti-glycation and antioxidant support, a modern, well-regarded angle on preserving skin quality.

Works well with

Complements antioxidants (vitamin C/E, ferulic, ergothioneine) and firming peptides.

Who it's for

Anyone focused on firmness, elasticity and preserving a fresh, non-sallow look.

Worth knowing

Anti-glycation is a preventative, long-game benefit, about protecting the structure you have.
